Hello Guest! There's a lot to look over, so sit back with a cup of coffee, relax and browse around. We have a great group of ship and boat modelers here, both newbies and old salts, from all over the world. Our goal here is to help each other, without criticism or rebuke. Both newbies and old salts alike can learn from each other. No one has all the answers. Our most basic rule is simple, respect for your fellow members and their opinions. And don't take yourself too seriously! wirewolf (John, AKA - Cap), Forum Administrator

Description » Basically about Percy & Small and their schooners, this is a wonderful book filled with interesting photos and plans (some of which are foldouts) and detailed descriptions of schooners built by the yard between 1894 and 1920. There is also a great deal about the actual construction of the ships, liberally illustrated with photos taken on site as they were being built. The book is a treasure for anyone interested in schooners. I bought it sight unseen, based only on a description posted by Amazon and I'm very pleased with it.

Click to view item » American Heavy Frigates 1794-1826
Description » This book is published by Osprey publishing which does a lot of quick reference books for modelers sold generally in hobby stores. It is an 8 x 10 paperback with glossy paper. It has a brief history the American Humphreys class frigates, i.e United States, Constitution, President etc for a total of 18 ships. It ONLY covers those frigates. It is basically a drawn out encyclopedia entry (48 pages) with some color plates and drawings. A couple showing mast layouts that might be useful to modelers. A cut away of the Constitution's deck layout is also included. This is mainly a historical quick reference book as such, useful pictures/info for modeling is lacking. It works good for those with limited space or budget (it's cheap) for a full library. JI give it roughly 1 out of 5 for modeling and 3 out of 5 for historical info.

Description » The anchor is one of the most important pieces of equipment on any vessel and one of the most common motifs and symbols on land--appearing in heraldic designs, on pub signs, and in churchyard sculpture, among other places. This book explains how the first simple pierced stones developed through the killick into the modern devices of today that hold the heaviest super tankers. No nautical archaeologist, naval historian, modelmaker, yachtsman, or boatswain should be without this basic reference book on the subject. By Betty Nelson Curryer

Click to view item » Chesapeake Sailing Craft
Description » For anyone interested in sailing ships and boats that used to ply the waters of the Chesapeake Bay, this book provides a world of old photos taken between the 1920´s to about the 1970´s. The book includes pictures of Log Canoes, Bugeyes, Pungies, Sloops, Two - masted Schooners, Rams, Skipjacks and Three - and Four masted Schooners. I think it could be a useful source to anyone wanting to know what this ships really looked liked and what they were used for. There are also some good pictures of abandoned vessels in decay. Along with some of the pictures, you can also find a brief history of the ship / boat and what happened to it. If you like books like this, I highly recommend it. By Robert H. Burgess

Description » The turn of the sixteenth century saw the start of a revolution in warfare at sea - A revolution long in the making, remarkably swift once begun. The driving force was gunpowder, the principale agents the galley and galleon. A beautifully written account of the age conveys exactly how a country like Portugal could establish outposts from South America to the Pacific, how Christian fleets wrested control of the Mediterranean from the Ottoman Empire, and why the "invincible" Spanish armada met with disaster in its attempt to invade England. A vivid page-turner.

Description » Want an extraordinary book for your Coffee Table? The extraordinary photography in this book was inspired by the author's reading of Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey/Maturin novels. In small museums along the English coast, and in private collections, McGuane has recorded artifacts recovered from shipwrecks and preserved by modern conservation techniques. Taken together, these unique treasures provide a window onto the everyday life of sailors and officers in the Royal Navy of the Napoleonic era............By James P. McGuane
