Crew for the HMS Bounty
 

I have found a cheap ( around $8 Australian) a reasonable way to provide scale figures at 1:48 for Artesania Latino's HMS Bounty of the same scale. Looking through the Preiser miniaturfiguren catalogue at my local Railroad Model shop I spied a set of 12 unpainted 'airforce' ( Art.Nr. 67000) figures in 1:48 scale (see Photo 1)[IMG] Using a bit of imagination, it wasn't hard to see that they could just about pass , with suitable treatment as crew for my near complete HMS Bounty.

So taking to them with a file and sandpaper, I removed the obvious 'airforce' detail, taking care not to attack the faces. Then after a couple a coats of bronze paint (Humbrol Super Enamel # 171) I had a passable set of scale figures to decorate the rigging and deck (photos 2 & 3). The idea was to present a representation of scale, not to add detail, so painting them bronze made them unobtrusive 'statues'. To the purist they would not pass muster, but to the general hobbyist, they do what was intended, to give visual scale to the boat.

Preiser put out unpainted figures in just about ever imaginable scale, so next time you are looking for a crew for your latest creation, call into you local model railroad/railway shop and check out the catalogue.

Hi all,

I used 1:48 scale Tamiya WWII German Tank Crew Field Maintenance Set for the figures on my "Bounty". (Kit No. 32547)

Most of them were in appropriate poses, looking like they were actually doing something instead of just standing around.

A couple of days work with a Dremel (tiny rotary burr) and a modelling knife modified them to look like 18th century sailors. Painting them made them look like they had been at sea for 18 months.

I'll try to post them below (never attempted to do it this way before).
