I am a former Marine - 1964 - 1968. The recruiting poster of the time said "TRAVEL? - Join the Marines" and that was what I wanted to do. I enlisted on the north side of Chicago. I was sent to MCRD San Diego (Yes, I am a Hollywood Marine), MCB Pendleton, NAS Memphis (I went in for aviation), NAS Jacksonville - and then I got orders to my "permanent duty station" NAS Glenview, Illinois. If you drove from the front gate of Glenview to my parent's home it was 10.9 miles (I measured it multiple times). I was at Glenview - I & I Staff to two USMCR A-4 squadrons - for 34.5 months. As I tell people, I joing the Corps to travel and I did not make it to Viet Nam, I did not make it out of country, heck, I didn't make it away from home.
As an aside, I know this is supposed to be "brief" but has any one counted the number of years of service from those who have posted? Imagine the talent, the training, the abilities that were garnered during our times of service. Semper Fi! |
